GOLD - the metal that made Australia

Gold has become part of almost every culture. A shiny metal that resists tarnishing, humans have placed high value on it – equating it with beauty, prestige and power.

Australia’s modern history is very much linked to gold. From the discoveries of gold which led to huge increases in Australia’s population, to the hardships of life on the goldfields which introduced the importance of “mateship” in Australian society, to the first steps in Australia’s road to democracy taken in the Eureka rebellion.
